Imagine twenty thousand, one hundred thousand or even three hundred thousand people all over Scotland asking the current administration in Edinburgh or Westminster why the treatment of drug addiction in our country seems to be an unqualified failure.
Question: Methadone (a strong artificial opiate itself) is being sold to government for passing via NHS lines to addicts and does not produce abstinence in the short term in the majority of cases. Expert research suggests that this method of treatment has been a failure. What then is government's intention to remedy this, and when?
Question: There have been suggestions that social security money might be withdrawn from drug users unless they agree to enter rehabiliatation. How will this work in areas where there are no such rehabilitation units?
Question: In some areas of Scotland there are no residential centres of rehabilitation. Primary detoxification, by whatever current method, is followed by a return to home environment - among the very people, places and things which contributed to the addict's demise in the first instance. What is the story concerning residential rehabiliation units?
Questions such as these must be asked seriously. Government seems to be tackling the problem of drugs in a new and holistic way and has invited comments on its paper from all citizens. It is our responsibility to support this venture with our experiential opinion.
It is your right to ask questions and to expect answers. Scotland does not stand alone but her youth is running towards certain incapax and death.
Remember that drugs are illegal because they are dangerous - not dangerous because they are illegal.
When you become a member of Drug Free Scotland we will e-mail you from time to time to request your support or comment:
a) We may send you a corporate letter from our group to read, copy and e-mail to parliament.
b) You may simply be given a website address which takes you to an international website where you can vote "Yes" or "No" and submit your commenmts. For example we have been called to vote and comment on drugs issues - legalisation of illicit drugs, selling of magic mushrooms etc from Ireland, Netherlands and Argentina. We responded globally and made a terrific difference to the outcome of government decision.
c) You can visit any of the international websites concerned with drugs and make your comment. This will make you aware of the size of the problem on a global perspective and show you what you can do with your votes and comments
d) You will most certainly receive mail concerning local and national decisions made in our parliament and asked to comment as an individual.
e) There is not a single statistic which will not be available to you for your perusal, such is the power of coalition.
Whether you decide to apply your comments to these invitations is entirely up to you. You may wish simply to cancel the e-mail message and that is okay. Alternatively you may wish to vote and comment. Please remember that your vote is precious to you and especially to us.
As things begin to happen for us we need your support - your name and e-mail address will suffice.
